A lot of rancor has been had at the film’s superficial adaptation, and it’s massive whitewashing of cultural roles. It’s a movie where the plot is literally the definition of cultural appropriation/whitewashing: an older white male businessman steals the identities of Japanese youths and remakes them as white people while erasing their ethnicity and stealing their mental labor.
